I hope you are well into “getting started” and are keeping a food diary and are giving some serious consideration to your emotional and physical well being with regard the foods you eat.
The purpose of this exercise is to be sure we all are paying attention to our bodies! The reasons I think we may not be paying attention are 1-I realized through my own journey to health that I hadn’t been paying attention (I was nothing short of shocked as my symptoms began to subside and I began to realize that I had very little awareness that the dull but energy-draining symptoms even existed) and 2-I kinda feel like if we (the collective “we”, not necessarily “you”) were paying attention, we’d never settle for the massive amounts of low-quality foods were are eating.
Cultivating this awareness might take some doing… It’s okay. It’s a process. I’m still working on this! And I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.
But alas, we are humans and that’s what we do. We get ahead of ourselves!
So I am thinking that you may have already begun to think ahead about how your food & drink choices may need to change in order to improve your health. And then you’re getting all worried that you’ll have to give up everything you love. And you’ll never get it back!
Well, I won’t kid you. You will have to give up some things. But, again, let’s try not to get ahead of ourselves! In fact, I’m going to ask you to suspend your fears about what you’ll be giving up. I’m going to ask you to imagine that your desire for the things you’ll need to give up will subside. And you’ll have a freedom you cannot begin to fathom. It’s more than a fair trade!
Anywhoooo, for now, I wanted to share with you three things that I never gave up and still had success in healing my metabolism and achieving freedom from food cravings. I’m willing to bet that at least one of these will cause you a big sigh of relief.
First off, if you know me you know that when I say “three things”, I probably mean “at least four” but most likely “five”! So, there really are five things. But three of the five are consolidated into one; so I truncated the list for you!
#1 – Coffee – I never gave up coffee. Even though I am caffeine sensitive, I never gave it
up, not because I was being obstinate or anything but because in the beginning, I didn’t know that most “introductory” diets, call for eliminating coffee/caffeine. I also sweetened my coffee with a small amount of local, raw honey & lightened it with local heavy whipping cream. Even though I’ve had my morning cup already today, just reliving it on paper makes my mouth water. (So that’s really 1-3; to recap I never completely gave up caffeine, sweeteners, or dairy – and I lived and healed my broken metabolism!)
#2-Wine – I never gave up wine. I cannot count the number of people who have told me
they’d love to do a Whole30 but they simply cannot give up wine (or other alcohol). OH. MY. GAW. Ok, here’s the deal. DO NOT let that be your excuse. I will tell you straight up that giving up wine for 30 days is a really, really good idea! First of all, if you can’t, well… And secondly, it will most certainly get in the way of you achieving weight loss and metabolic restoration goals because your liver would do best to be dedicated to only the things it has to do, not add-on stuff like detoxing alcohol. That said, I achieved unbelievable results and didn’t give it up.
#3-Chocolate – I never gave up chocolate. Dark chocolate. Without any stuff in it (including soy lecithin). Did I pay a lot for good chocolate? I did! But it was still less than a box of
Twinkies. Do I still pay a lot for good chocolate? You betcha’!!
The caveat here is that I did not abuse any of the above three. I consumed all of them in minimal quantities (one cup of coffee each morning, about 3 glasses of wine per week, and a few squares or about 1/3 of a medium bar of chocolate every day – without fail!). If you are abusing any of them (or any other food for that matter), it needs to go (eventually – not yet – and figuring this out is all part of the self-surveying we are currently developing).
Also, I want to be very clear that I am not promising you results and/or optimal health without giving these up (whether never, short term, long term, or forever). There is not way I could know if and how these foods & drinks might effect you. We all must learn to assess the impact of foods & drinks on our individual health and take personal accountability for deciding what can stay and what must go.
My point is to offer you hope! To make sure you know that there is joy to be had in a whole foods diet!
